ANICA

ANICA
Drenched in color, inspired by experience, shaped by emotion, my art has always been the language of my thoughts. The lights, the darks, the depth, the layers that come from exploring textures and colors - they say more about how I feel, about who I am, than words ever could.  I am drawn to express myself through many materials: steel gives strength to my emotions of love, anger and frustration, canvas allows me to express my Latina heritage, textiles collected on my travels add dimension and memories. Underlying all of this work are the unexpected joys that arise from transformation: molding metal to accept paint, using fabric and wood to blur the line between sculpture and painting, extracting and magnifying uniqueness while creating something altogether new.

Anica is a resident artist at The Bakehouse Art Complex, located in Wynwood, Miami, FL. She was born in Lima, Peru, and came to the United States in 1970. Her training and experience includes photography, painting, printmaking, mixed media and steel sculpture.

Anica began her art studies at the age of 12, studying painting under Madame Montero in Piura, Peru. After coming to the US, she studied design at LaSalle University in Chicago, graduating in 1975. Between 1979 and 1983, she trained in oil painting at the School of Art in Caracas, Venezuela. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she trained in printmaking, mixed media and steel sculpture at the Pratt Institute in New York City and at the Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, CT.
