Personal Statement

My Truths

...Drenched in color, inspired by experience, shaped by emotion, my art has always been the language of my thoughts. The lights, the darks, the depth, the layers that come from exploring textures and colors, they say more about how I feel, about who I am, than words ever could. My intention as an artist is to document and to bring awareness of the social and cultural realities that are patent in our world today.

The starting points are the photographs that I take, images of people and places. I photograph them aiming to capture their spirit, their beat, their struggle, the reality and uniqueness of their lives and their environment. The photographs are then printed on canvas and by utilizing many layers of paint, textiles and papers I weaved many symbols the realities that are not pleasant to accept, or transcribing facts that otherwise disappeared.

This allows me to add perceptions at the scene: the uniqueness, emotions and contradictions that I felt, thus conveying the fullness of the intended message. Underlying this work are the unexpected joys that arise from transformation: extracting and magnifying uniqueness while creating something altogether new.

My work

The Business of Art

2016

In these series I record what I saw when attending a gallery, fair and museums, many times wondering why are people there really.... is it the fashionable thing to do? Are they really art lovers? Do they truly enjoy the experience? Do they really understand the meaning of it all? Are they going to buy? They move so fast that my head spins and my camera gets out of focus. I love it!

Some of the work is about curious incidents, some are about funny reactions people have when they see something different, some are about the rush of the moment, some are about the resting moments and some are just my imagination gone wild.

Tableaux Vivant

2015

My current works are recreations or embodiments of anonymous figures that I endow with human qualities.

My painted living statues are an updated version of the Tableaux Vivant which was common in Medieval and Renaissance festivities and pageantry. Representing everyday ocurrances.

Just as in real live where people who present a showy facade when in public, hiding their true inner selves, like many of us do in public spaces or at a party.

Avataraty

2015

My Avataraty series are recreations or embodiments of anonymous figures (mannequins) into which I endow them with human or divine qualities of a God.

I want to create a sense of the existence of a powerful spiritual prescience by emphasizing the personification of optimist and the power of hope.

Cuba Today

2014

This series about Havana comes from having traveled there in 1996 and in 2012, got interested in photographing the realities of what´s happening.  The changes already taking place.

Cuba is an underdeveloped country with developed world problems like unemployment, prostitution and much more.  A visit to Havana is a snapshot of what it was, buildings in disrepair, 50-year-old cars, the new restaurants with menus comparable to any big city yet the disparity in everyday life with the lower classes.

Of Course, today in 2018 everything has changed and it is all up for grabs and it is history in the making…

Vinification

2013

Images are the language of my thoughts. I am inspired by my surroundings and experiences lived.

Sorting thru the images that “make sense”, I weave them into fragments that tell a story.  Some are printed either on canvas or paper utilizing mixed media to deliver the intended message.  Others I leave pristine.  The purpose of it all is to capture instances in time that form a story, one that is interpreted by the observers who add their biases as they reflect on the images.

In this series I explore the process of wine making from capturing the grapes until they are in the store or at the table, leaving to the imagination.

I used camera motion technique to extend the narrative, and recorded the drama by the perspective used to take the pictures. Color is integral to the story, and my aim to make the story a personal one, yet one the viewer can enter and share the emotions.

Oneiric Theory

2013

In this series I explore the issue of “Beyond Consciousness “or Oneiric Theory.

In my representation of oneiric content I use camera motion technique to extend the narrative. Dark spaces allow the imagination while light reconstructs the space.  The aim is to present the viewer with a dream like of emotions. It questioned me for days if it was real or if it was a dream.

The dream was of exploring the city at a very fast pace, so fast that I could not feel my feet or see the others, it seemed as if they were on wheels, the colors kept getting stronger and it felt like deja-vu, The feeling as many times before, and it felt like a nightmare because no one was familiar.

That hot day in which the temperature rose above the 100 degree mark plus the rush of the city at 3pm gave the “beyond Consciousness” feeling in addition to that was the perspective and technique from which I took the pictures.

LAYERS OF MEANING

2007-2010

I seek to experience the cities of the world, their unique spirit, their beat, their struggle, their belly, the feel of it all. My focus these days is people, and the way they conduct the daily services of life: the policeman, the waiter, the seamstress, the paper boy, the beggar, the bank teller, the actress, the student, the priest, the runner, the bartender, the postman, the street vendor, the cook, the taxi driver, the whore.

I photograph them hoping to capture their realities and the physical uniqueness of their city. The pictures describe the facts and when transferred to stretch fabric, they become a biased canvas in which to paint my memories, to express the essence of what I felt standing, smelling, hearing, touching, and picturing.

SPIRALS OF LIIFE

2009-2011

Art is the language of my thoughts and the way to express my self.  My inspiration comes from my surroundings and experiences lived.  The purpose of it all is to capture instances in time that form a story, one that is interpreted by the observer who add their biases as hey reflect on the images.

This series “Spirals of Life” is about identity, perception but at the same time it is about color, form and space. Textures are used as tools. That the thought process is similar to my life experience with bits and pieces of information, that it all becomes part of my narrative. I do not want my work to be easy to read, it needs to be discover little by little, there are many symbols that hide among the layers and you can find them in all of my paintings, they all have a common thread, one that I will not reveal.

At the same time it honors my favorite artist Hunterwaser, a friend gave a calendar with his work and it totally transform my and my vision on how I saw art.
