SPIRALS OF LIFE

2009 To Present

This series "Spirals of Life” is about identity and perception but at the same time it is about color, form and space. Textures are used as tools. The thought process is similar to my life experience with bits and pieces of information; it all becomes part of my narrative.

I do not want my work to be easy to read, it needs to be discovered little by little, there are many symbols that hide among the layers and you can find them in all of my paintings, they all have a common thread, one that I will not reveal.

At the same time it honors my favorite artist Hunterwaser. A friend gave me a calendar with his work and it totally transformed me and my vision on how I saw art.

THE BUSINESS OF ART

2010 to present

In this series I recorded what I saw when attending a gallery, fair or museum, many times wondering why are people there really….  is it the fashionable thing to do?  Are they really art lovers?  Do they truly enjoy the experience? Do they really understand the meaning of it all?  Are they going to buy? They move so fast that my head spins and my camera gets out of focus. I love it!

Some of the work is about curious incidents, some are about funny reactions people have when they see something different, some are about the rush of the moment, some are about the resting moments and some are just my imagination gone wild.

The medium is digital photography with mixed media.

THE DOORS OF GALLIPOLY and BEYOND

2014 To Present

This series explores the unusual antique wooden  doors off the Coasts of the Mediterranan.  Gallipoli was my first of the series.  It is an ancient town on the heel of Italy’s boot.

Some of the pictures are from Antibes, a Mediterranean resort in the Alpes Maritimes of Southern France between Cannes and Nice.

The doors tell the story of civilizations that traveled the Mediterranean Sea, its locks the perils of its hardy residents, leaving the rest of the story to the imagination.

TABLEAUX VIVANT

2015

This body of work are recreations of embodiments of anonymous figures that I endow with human qualities.

My painted living statues are an updated version of the Tableaux Vivant which was common in Medieval and Renaissance festivities and pageantry.  Representing everyday life.

Just as in real life where people  present a showy facade when in Public, hiding their true inner selves.

AVATARATY

2015

My Avataraty series are recreations or embodiments of anonymous figures (mannequins) into which I endow with human or divine qualities.

I want to create a sense of the existence of a powerful spiritual presence by emphasizing the personification of optimism and the power of hope.

This series utilizes advances in technology that inspire my creativity and push the boundaries of where I can take it, giving the mannequins a new life.

ONEIRIC THEORY

2012

In this series I explore the issue of “Beyond Consciousness “or Oneiric Theory.

In my representation of oneiric content I use camera motion technique to extend the narrative. Dark spaces allow the imagination while light reconstructs the space.  The aim is to present the viewer with a dream like of emotions. It questioned me for days if it was real or if it was a dream.

The dream was of exploring the city at a very fast pace, so fast that I could not feel my feet or see the others, it seemed as if they were on wheels, the colors kept getting stronger and it felt like a nightmare because no one was familiar.

VINIFICATION

2013

In this series I explore the process of wine making beginning with harvesting the grapes until they are in the store or at the table, leaving to the imagination.

I used camera motion technique to extend the narrative, and recorded the drama by the perspective used to take the pictures. Color is integral to the story, and my aim is to make the story a personal one, yet one the viewer can enter and share the emotion.

LAYERS OF MEANING

2007-2011

I seek to experience the cities of the world, their unique spirit, their beat, their struggle, their underbelly, the feel of it all. My focus these days is people, and the way they conduct the daily services of life: the policeman, the waiter, the seamstress, the paper boy, the beggar, the bank teller, the actress, the student, the priest, the runner, the bartender, the postman, the street vendor, the cook, the taxi driver, the whore.

I photograph them hoping to capture their realities and the physical uniqueness of their city. The pictures describe the facts and when transferred to stretch fabric, they become a biased canvas in which to paint my memories, to express the essence of what I felt standing, smelling, hearing, touching, and seeing.
