Riomaggiore is a village and comune in the province of La Spezia, situated in a small valley in the Liguria region of Italy. It is the first of the Cinque Terre one meets when travelling north from La Spezia. The legend says that it was founded in the 8th century by Greek refugees fleeing persecution in Byzantium. From a historial perspective dates back the 13th century when the inhabitants descended from hills in order to exploit natural resources by the sea. The new Village was built in a valley between 2 steep hills and name after “Rivus Major”.
